Country Cousins (MM/FF, +)

Ten year old Kassandra and Katherine are identical twins in more ways than just their appearance. As most twins do they dress alike and do their hair the same way but the similarities go deeper. They are both quite intelligent, at the top of their class and both are good athletes. Another similarity is their attitude. They share the same snobby opinion that they are better than other kids their age.

Each girl is the others best, and only, friend because no one else will put up with their arrogance. That suits them fine because as far as they are concerned no one else is good enough to be their friend. They are known as the “princesses” and not in a flattering way.

When Mom informed them that they would be visiting relatives on the farm where she grew up they were appalled. The idea of spending time around simple rural folk and smelly animals disgusted them. When Mom informed them that they would be attending the County Fair they were truly horrified. It meant more of those red-necked people and more smelly animals. Just the thought of livestock pooping in public made them gag.

Mom had grown up on the farm but as far as they were concerned she had the sense to leave and come to the city. They felt there was no need for her to expose them to the torture of slow internet and poor mobile signal. They really didn’t want to go but they had no choice.

As the car cruised down the highway the girls ignored their fate by focusing on the games they played on their tablets. When the car turned off onto the county road the ride became a bit bumpier and playing wasn’t so easy. As perfectionists who weren’t accustomed to making mistakes they found that the accuracy of a touch screen was greatly reduced by hands that shook with every dip in the road.

Before long the pavement disappeared and they had their introduction to dirt roads. Even at a reduced speed the car jolted and jumped. They put away their games and for the first time lifted their heads to look out.

Clouds of dust billowed behind the car. On either side was nothing but fields and farms. No tall buildings, no malls and no signs of civilization (at least not what they considered civilization). As they passed each barn beside the road the girls had their introduction to the pungent smell of manure.

To Mom it was the smell of being home again. To the girls it was the smell of being far from their comfort zone. Mom found their whining amusing at first but soon tired of it and gave the girls an ultimatum; “no more complaining”. She told the girls to think of this trip as a scholastic experience. To embrace the opportunity to learn more about the world they live in. Mom is very smart. She knows that if she presents this excursion as an educational opportunity the girls will be more likely to accept it.

A left turn at the mail box that has cow painted on the side led them down a long driveway. As they neared the house the girls studied the estate. It was not out of any personal interest. They were testing their knowledge of agricultural architecture. They identified a barn, a silo, the machinery shed and a chicken coop. The small building behind the house was a mystery to them that would have to be solved later.

In whispers between them they had decided that the remainder of the weekend would be devoted to observation and analyses. The hypothesis was that at least if they weren’t going to enjoy themselves they could possibly learn something.

As the car pulled up to a stop Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Clyde came out to greet them followed by two boys. While the adults hugged and gushed about “how long has it been” and “it’s so good to see you” the kids studied each other.

The boys saw two pretty cousins dressed alike in white dresses, white tights and shiny black shoes. Their shoulder length blond hair hung down in curls at the sides and was gathered into ponytails at the back. As kids who could recognize every cow in a herd of 100 it took them no time at all to notice that the one on the left was slightly bow legged and the one on the right had a pointier chin.

The girls saw two boys who were slightly taller than they were. One had a stubbly crew cut and the other short hair with a part on the side and the front combed back into a cowlick. They both wore faded jeans and t-shirts. The one with the red t-shirt had sneakers on, the one with the blue t-shirt had rubber boots. The eleven year old boys were also twins but looked so different not many people realized it.

Aunt Bonnie hugged the girls, much to their dismay, and said ‘My goodness it’s been so long since I’ve seen you two, you’re all grown up now. You’ve never met my boys, this is Konnor and Kurtis. Boys say hello to your cousins, I’m not sure which is which, but this is Katie and Kassie.’

The girls nearly went into shock. No one ever called them Katie and Kassie. They looked at their mom. She just smiled back.

The boys stepped forward and offered their hands to shake but the girls didn’t respond when they saw the grubby fingers and the dirt under their nails. ‘That’s no way to greet family’ said Bonnie as she gave her sons a push. They embraced their cousins in a hug.

Neither the boys nor the girls liked hugging and it ended quickly.

‘It’s still a few hours until supper’ said Aunt Bonnie ‘why don’t you girls give the boys some help. They have a lot to do to get ready for the Fair tomorrow.’ They looked at their mom with that “do we have to?” face. She looked back at them with that “don’t piss me off!” face.

The boys didn’t want to have anything to do with these two “city girls” but reluctantly took them along. They spent the next hour measuring cucumbers to find the longest one, examining pumpkins to find the biggest one and chasing chickens to find the heaviest one. A major event at the Fair was a competition to find the “biggest or best” in dozens of categories. The boys hoped to win a few ribbons.

It didn’t take long for the cousins to get over their initial dislike of each other and soon they were chatting. The girls had many questions about the Fair and perked up when they found out that there were also athletic contests for the kids. In addition to a number of races there were also competitions to see who could jump the highest and who could jump the farthest. None of these events were new to the girls until the boys mentioned the three-legged race.

The puzzled expressions on their faces told the boys that they had never heard of it. It also told them that maybe they could have a bit of fun with their cousins.

Kurtis explained that two people stood side by side. The ankles that were together would be tied to create “one leg” so that the result was two competitors with three legs. Konnor told them that it was very difficult and that they probably couldn’t do it. His comment got the response he was hoping for. They wanted to try it.

The boys dashed off to the barn and returned with several lengths of baling twine. The strong thin rope is used to hold together bales of hay. The girls were instructed to stand close together. Katie was on the left and Kassie on the right. Kurtis tied their ankles together. He told Katie to put her right arm behind her back towards her sister. He then put Kassie’s right arm behind Katie’s back and tied their wrists together. He told Kassie to do the same with her left hand and he tied it to Katie’s left.

‘Are you sure this is how it’s done?’ asked Kassie ‘It doesn’t seem right.’

‘That’s because I’m not done yet’ he answered. The boys each took a cousin by the shoulders and turned her so that they were now back to back with their arms crossed and bound behind them. Konnor dropped to his knees and tied the other two ankles together.

‘I have a feeling that you are just joking with us aren’t you?’ asked Katie.

The boys grinned at how easy it was to trick their “city cousins”. They waited for them to get upset and beg to be untied. It didn’t happen. ‘Are you thinking what I’m thinking?’ said Katie to Kassie. ‘I’m fairly certain that I am’ she replied.

Now it was the boys turn to look puzzled. They had no idea what was going on.

‘How far is a three-legged race?’ asked Kassie. The boys looked at each other and agreed that it was about the distance from where they stood to the chicken coop. ‘We know you tricked us but we have an offer for you’ said Katie. ‘We’ll run the race like this and you can time it. Then we get to tie you up the same way and you have to run the race. The winners get to tie up the losers again, in any way they want.’

The boys looked at each other and smiled. These city girls were turning out to be a lot more fun than they expected. They both nodded in agreement and the race was on.

I also cannot wait to hear the continuation. I do remember loving this story, but I will have to reread the first part of the story once you release the rest.

After writing the first part of this story I promised to continue it but then took a year off from the site. It has been a long time coming but I have finally written Chapter 2.

Part Two

Konnor put his watch into stop watch mode and counted down ‘Three…two…one…go!’

After two stumbling steps the girls synchronized and moved slowly but efficiently towards the chicken coop. Hens scattered with a cluck as the girls approached. After having been mirror images for so long working together like this was second nature to them.

When they reached the coop they solidly bumped into it with their shoulders to signal that they had arrived. The scared hens inside came clattering out of the door squawking loudly in a flurry of feathers.

‘Twenty seconds’ Konnor announced ‘we can beat that no problem!’

The boys untied the girls and handed them the ropes. Katie and Kassie, as they had now accepted as their new names (at least here at the farm), began to tie them up. After a wink and a smile to each other the girls, who were normally not shy too brag about their abilities, kept silent about the fact that in their short stint in the Girl Scouts they had mastered every knot in the Handbook. At a glance the boys appeared to be tied in an identical manner as the girls. The reality of a close inspection would show that wasn’t the case.

Each knot was tighter, every cinch had absolutely no slack and all of the connecting ties were a little shorter. The boys didn’t know it but their mobility was much more restricted than they realized. As it turned out these secretive measures were hardly necessary.

Kassie held the watch and counted down ‘Three...two…one…go!’

It was immediately obvious from the first awkward step that the two lads had grown up completely independent of each other. They had no concept of cooperation and in every movement they made they were in opposition. They went sideways more than forwards and lost a lot of time to course corrections.

Their time was so dismal that Kassie didn’t announce it to save them some embarrassment and they didn’t ask.

While untying the boys it was agreed that they would finish their chores, have supper and then get together in the barn where the girls could claim their reward.

The boys each blamed the other for their humiliating defeat and for the rest of the afternoon were rather curt with each other. The girls on the other hand were very pleased that they had turned their cousin’s deception around on them.

When Aunt Bonnie called them for supper they hurried to the house but before they could eat they had to clean up. The girl’s dresses were filthy, their shoes were scuffed and their tights went straight into the trash. Mom had them strip down in the washroom and she scrubbed them vigorously removing every trace of soil and other smelly substances. Then to their horror she ushered them out of the room into the hallway clad only in their bras and panties.

‘Go to your room and get some clothes on’ she commanded. They scampered down the hallway hoping that neither the boys nor Uncle Clyde would come along.

In their room they found that clever Mom had anticipated the fate of their inappropriate clothes. Spread out on the bed were blue jeans, plaid shirts, grey work socks and rubber boots. The girls were dismayed at Mom’s fashion choices but had to concede the practicality of the apparel under these circumstances. They dressed without a fuss except for one issue.

Mom had purchased one red plaid shirt and one blue plaid shirt. The girls had no problem figuring out that the color choices were for the benefit of Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Clyde who couldn’t tell them apart. Each wanted the red but then they agreed that they would switch shirts as often as possible to keep everyone guessing.

After a round of rock/paper/scissors Katie went to supper in red and Kassie followed in blue.

Supper was followed by a variety of home baked desserts and milk from their own cows. Everyone pitched in to clean up. The girls groaned at the “primitive” lack of a dishwasher and had their first exposure to manually drying dishes.

Then the kids excused themselves to leave the adults chatting over coffee and tea while they went to the barn for the result of their three-legged race.

The boys seemed to be nervous. It was obvious from their performance earlier that the girls were very capable with ropes. Kurtis and Konnor had some experience at playing “escape games” and always managed to get free but they were having some doubts about their chances this time. Little did they know that it was going to be much worse than they imagined.

Unknown to the boys the girls had a brief discussion about the desired outcome of the penalty they were about to inflict on their cousins. They agreed that since the boys had taken them as suckers when they proposed the race there would have to be an element of humiliation to their punishment to exact a little revenge.

Kassie took charge of Kurtis while Katie had other plans for Konnor.

Kassie led Kurtis over to one of the heavy wooden posts that supported the roof of the barn. She had him sit with his back against it. She pulled his arms behind him around the post and tied his wrists. There was nothing more to it, that’s all she needed to accomplish her plan.

As Kassie walked away saying ‘I’ll be back in a minute’ he thought that this was rather disappointing. He had expected a much more complex tie up from such an intelligent girl and actually he had been looking forward to it.

When she returned she was holding one hand up high and half a dozen calves were following her.

‘This afternoon you explained to us that each calf finds its own mother by her unique smell’ said Kassie ‘I wonder what happens if someone smells like all of the mothers.’

‘I rubbed my hand on all of the mom’s udders’ explained Kassie as she ran her hand over Kurtis’ face and neck ‘let’s see what they do.’

As she stepped away the calves surrounded Kurtis and began to lick him. Their rough tongues chafed his skin and they became more aggressive as their efforts failed to produce any milk. Kurtis twisted and turned but there was little he could do to get away from them. Meanwhile Konnor was having his own problems.

Katie had taken him out to the split rail fence that kept the cows out of the chicken yard. She had him put his back to the fence and then put his arms out to the sides along the top rail. She tied him at his wrists and elbows. Then she put his legs through the fence resting his knees on the lower rail and tying them there.

She climbed over the fence and pulled off his rubber boots and socks. Cupping some water from the trough in her hand she wet his feet and then tossed some chicken feed on them. The wet feed stuck to his feet and soon the hens were pecking away at them.

The girls stood together at the back door of the barn, a vantage point from which they could see both boys, and they had a good laugh at their country cousins.

Chapter Three

The friendship that had been developing between the boys and girls suffered a setback due to the humiliating tie ups that the girls inflicted on their cousins. Kurtis had a very red raw face and more than once the calf had managed to slip its slimy tongue into his mouth. Konnor’s feet were pecked raw and slightly swollen, an outcome that Katie hadn’t anticipated.

The girls apologized and the boys seemed to accept their regrets but when they returned to the house it was obvious that they were not happy.

There was some family time in front of the fireplace with toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate and then it was bed time. The girls had always gone to bed early and woken up early so living on “farm time” was no problem for them. After the way they had treated them the girls let the boys shower first.

While waiting their turn in the shower Katie and Kassie had two topics of conversation. First of all was who would sleep on which side. They had this argument whenever they shared a bed and even though it was a huge down feather mattress there was some concern that there might not be enough room for two. It was another round of rock/paper/scissors that decided that Katie would be on the right side.

The other subject of discussion was what needed to be done to get back on the good side of the boys. Tomorrow was going to be a full day at the Fair and it wouldn’t be much fun if there were still hard feelings.

Konnor knocked on their door and said ‘The shower is available.’ Having lost the bed contest Kassie was allowed to shower first. In ten minutes Kassie was refreshed and in her pajamas and Katie took her turn.

When Katie returned to the bedroom she opened the door, stepped in and was grabbed. A hand was clamped over her mouth and her arms were held tightly. She knew there was no point in struggling, the boys were much stronger than she was.

Kassie was tied spread eagle to the bed and gagged with a sock and a bandanna. Katie was relieved when the sock pushed into her face was a clean one and she reluctantly opened her mouth. Konnor pushed the sock in gently but deeply and then Kurtis tied the bandanna cleave gag tightly.

‘Since you girls like to do everything together’ said Konnor ‘we knew that you would be thrilled to be sharing a bed.’

‘We are going to make it even more fun’ said Kurtis ‘instead of sleeping side by side you’re going to sleep one on top of the other.’

They pulled Katie on top of Kassie and tied her spread eagle too. A piece of twine around their waists made sure that they stayed together.

They boys giggled as they left the room and Konnor said ‘we’ll be back when the rooster crows.’

‘Sleep tight’ added Kurtis with a laugh.

The girls tested their bonds and they were too tight to get out of. They conceded defeat. It wasn’t such a comfortable arrangement but they were so tired from their active day that they quickly fell asleep.

The boys woke before the rooster and quietly slipped into the room before sunrise and untied the girls without even waking them. They slept through the rooster crowing but woke up a little later when mom knocked at the door. They panicked at first not wanting to be discovered tied up. Once they realized they were free they scrambled to untie the gags and answer mom before she peeked in the door.

The boys had already gathered all of the veggies that they intended to enter in the contests and over breakfast the conversation turned to what the girls might do at the Fair. Being athletic they were anxious to enter all of the various running, jumping and throwing competitions. It didn’t take long before it turned into a bragging match over who would win more ribbons.

Nothing was said in front of their parents but it was silently understood that another tie up was up for grabs to the most successful pair of twins.

Studying the program for the fair in the truck on the way there the cousins counted six contests that they would be entering. The girls now had to pick six, three each, from the eight athletic challenges that were available. At the end of the day the girls had won five ribbons, the boys only four.

Kurtis accepted defeat gracefully, Konnor warned ‘that there better be no animals involved this time.’

Contrary to my previous comment there will be one more chapter.
