Forstal reformatory for Unruly Rich Boys (collab with xtc)

Postby Jason Toddman » Sun May 03, 2015 7:03 am

here is another collaboration xtc and me. xtc came up with the basic ideas and situations, I made some suggestions and did the artwork as best as i could in 3d (some ideas needed more modification than others), we put it all together, and now here are the first few pages of the result.

Glad to see this posted. I shall probably post it on DA when I find out whether I can get some pics on the same document without a loss of definition.
Thanks for all your work on this project.

I hope they've raised their resolution limits since i was there like this site seems to have done. When i was at DA, it was impossible to post anything that was much over 1 MB, and some of these are 2 MB or more.

It's the next one in the queue. As we agreed to go by subject arcs whenever possible, it didn't seem to fit here to me.

The Forstal MUST be expensive if they can afford to use such a comfortable (and, for 6 convicts and 2 – 3 guards, rather large) bus for convict transportation.
Btw: Did a bus like that really exist – or is it a product of Toddman Industries?

I’m wondering why Edward King (the last boy in the row) is gagged and hobbled and the other boys are not.

Will Forstal authorities subject Phuong to an extra program (diet and/or workout)? He’s a bit chubby, isn’t he?

You see, I’m curious to learn more about the Forstal.

As Mr. Toddman's collaborator, perhaps I could be allowed to answer this. (If not, he can always take it down!)

Jason gave me a choice of buses; I THINK it is a vintage model.
As for Edward and Phuong: watch this space.

I'll get the Head Teacher to send you a prospectus.

To add to xtc's answer, he wanted something a bit more timeless than a modern bus, and so this is what we chose. i didn't design the bus myself however if this is what you are asking; it is one of the rad-made props i bought at DAZ. My ability to create my own props is severely limited.

As for Edward King, you'll notice that his crime was related to his own parents. So he is now being subjected to a little tough love (and maybe a tad of vindictiveness) from said parents, who have paid extra for their son to have a little extra attention.

And Phuong is indeed also facing a punishment that fits his crime by being subjected to a regimen of strict diet and, as yu'll soon see, exercise.

And as for learning more about Fostral... voila!!

Forstal, Forstal...Hmm, interesting name for a "reformatory." Is the name supposed to imply that they are trying to "forestall" their sinking into a life of crime, with the highly unusual tactics? Otherwise, good collaboration, Mr. XTC and Mr. Toddman.

I am renowned for my fondness for the English language and for vernacular history. A reformatory establishment at Borstal in Kent (England) gave it's name to all such establishments and, in several Kentish villages (and Villages of Kent, before some pedant picks me up on that) the Forstal was a prominent house ("first hall"). Seemed like to good a bit of word-play to pass up.

On page 13, I miss Gary and Phuong. Are they being punished by having to spend the night a bit less comfortably than the other boys?

To
The Headmaster
Forstal Reformatory for Boys

Dear Sir,

I am very impressed by the methods you use to form the character of the boys entrusted to you. They are definitely more promising than those recommended by all those dogooders who talk big in what’s called “education science” today.

Therefore I plan to entrust my twins Silvio and Marco (turn 14 in July) to you as soon as possible; I am sure you will find a way to cure them from those bad habits they recently acquired, like smoking, playing truant, lying, talking back etc.

Before I make a final decision, however, I have a few issues that I would like to be clarified.
- Can I give you instructions as to how to deal with my boys? I noticed that for that Edward King, this was possible, so I think it is possible for Marco and Silvio too.
For example, I would like the boys to be kept in chains 24/7 (unless, of course, you decide to use stricter restraints on them), and you had better keep them permanently gagged, except for lessons and meals, of course. That is the only way to keep them from backtalking, cursing and probably complaining.
- I was quite surprised to see those makeshift gags you use on your convicts. In an institution that has, despite its short existence, already gained a reputation of being highly professional, one would expect something more professional than gags like the ones we used on prisoners when we played ‘Cowboys and Indians’ as Boy Scouts. I’m sure, however, this is just due to a delayed delivery.
- I was very pleased to see that the boys are secured for the night in a way that effectively prevents inadequate activities. A second look at page 13, however, told me that the job has not been done as carefully as it should be done: Tony Prince’s left leg is NOT secured to the bed post, so that he can move it freely, and his left arm is chained to the bedFRAME instead of the bedpost, giving him even more freedom of movement. Moreover, Monty Royal’s blindfold is not placed correctly: his right eye still has an, albeit limited, field of sight under the blindfold.
You might find it a good idea to have a word in earnest with whoever is responsible for the dormitory to make him do his job correctly in future.
- Traditional educationists know that one of the best ways to form a boy’s character is hard work. So far, however, your brochure gives no informations about any kind of work the boys are to do.
So, do you (or do you plan to) assign some kind of hard work to the boys? In addition to the positive effect on the boys’ character, it could also be beneficial to the financial situation of your institution.
- I am afraid it will be a problem to get my boys into your custody: They will hardly follow me to your premises vountarily. So, the only possibility I see is to ask you to send a team to my home that takes them by surprise. If it is possible to do so at nighttime while they are asleep, they could both be chained, gagged and ready for transport before they realize what’s happening.

I love my boys and do not want to be so hard on them, but I am afraid that if I do not take effective measures, they will sooner or later end in prison.

I trust in you to have the positive effect on them that is so badly needed.

Some day, they will thank me.

Yours sincerely

Frank Linke-Crawford

Dear Mr. Linke Crawford,

I am glad that you appreciate our techniques but I am not sure that you appreciate the underlying philosophy that governs our establishment.

We would be glad to accept your sons into our establishment (subject to the customary remittances of revenue) but I am sure you will understand that a "cure" cannot be guaranteed. It must be said, however, that OfSTED have rated us as "Outstanding" as a result of our six previous inspections.

We do try to accommodate parental requests but our aim is to encourage our students to take responsibility for their own conduct. Of course your twins will be kept gagged initially but I am sure that you will appreciate that, if they manage to demonstrate a determination to moderate their language, they will be allowed to be free to contribute to lessons. Of course, sleeping arrangements are non-negotiable.

I would be grateful if you would refrain from referring to our students as "convicts" but would be pleased to invite you to examine the standard of the gags that we use in person. Perhaps you would like to bring the twins with you.

I am afraid you have caught us out. Some of the photographs in the prospectus have, of necessity, been posed. I assure you, however, that the boys are assured of a very peaceful night in reality.

I agree with you that there are financial benefits to encouraging our students in their industry. May I assure you that the nature of the work that the students will be expected to undertake will become clear to you very soon.

Please do not concern yourself about the efficacy of the recruitment of our students, none has yet managed to escape the attentions of our staff.

I am sure that our establishment will benefit your youngsters but, if you have any concerns, do not hesitate to contact our office
