Board downtime

Postby zanev » Fri Apr 29, 2016 7:22 pm

May 6-7 im shutting down the board to work on it.

I need to update it, as well as clear out inactive members. If you have less than 4 posts and your account was made before February of this year then it will be deleted.

I don't expect anything to be deleted but in the past mistakes have happened. So if you have anything on this site you desperately need, save it to your computer.

Zanev -

I strongly urge you to reconsider your definition of "inactive member". A lot of people read but don't post. Don't you have a way to see when their last login was? I would think that not having logged in for the last two years, even with 100 posts to one's credit, is more symptomatic of an inactive account than joining in January, posting just three times, but logging in every week to read. Yet by your definition the first account stays while the second one dies.

There is much in what cellofello says but one would think that, if members read stories, it might not be too much to expect them to support the writers whose work they are enjoying by commenting.

Hallo, was first reader, than author now again more reader again. Even I now give less feedback because I look for new stories so have mostly a look new, but if I don´t like than I keep silent. I must love story very much that I say want read more. Even the most authors like post her not any more or very less. I see that could happen RL take so much space that possible that only have time for a bedtime story on a.

For once I'm on the same page as xtc. :) The vast majority of people have made more than 3 posts anyway. I've calculated that just over 140 people are going to be deleted, or about 2.5%. This may be slightly more because I only took an average from the very first 6 pages of members to sign up, so obviously there will be more new members who haven't made 4 posts. Also, I get people look at the site and don't comment but it doesn't take too much effort once in a while to make a post or even just a reply.

What you guys don't see is the extensive work our team has to do with bots and people who join just to spam the boar . Keeping inactive accounts puts the board at risk and throws off the dynamics of the board. I've done this every year for 6 years, I just never annouced it so openly til now. It works and people can rejoin if they need to.

In short, people need to prove that they're real. The bot overload is a bit too much. 5-20 fake accounts are created daily.

I support this opinion. I am reading many stories - some more than once - and enjoying them. I am regretting often when stories aren't finished. But I don't comment very often. For: a) I want write something substantial, not only thanks or good or... b) I'm not used to write in English, so a) is a bit difficult. I don't know about the possibilities of statistics of the board. But to see that stories are read is a recognition of the writer, also without comment. When I buy a book and read it I can't normally comment it.

I get you, but it's very hard for them to tell who is real and who is fake. There are loads of 'lurkers' on this site which need getting rid of. As I said before, surely it isn't too hard just to say something...?

But the writers of those books get paid; writers on this site get no acknowledgment at all other than comments. Think of it as a tip jar for wait staff at a restaurant you go to often.

Don't worry about making a further update, Zanev. when you're ready to do the update; just do it. Anyone who can't figure out what's going on after all this warning time can just lie awake at night wondering what happened.
